Welcome to my Blog

This blog is both exciting and scary for me. But hey, I’m game for adventure of any kind, so here I am.  I’m venturing into a new career in the world of authors. That’s right. My first book, Only When the Loon Sings, a Historical Romance, will be released January 27,2012 by  The Wild Rose Press.  And that’s the exciting part.  But I’m not computer savvy, so….that’s the scary aspect.

Let me tell you a bit about myself and you’ll understand why compiling a web site (Visit me here at Beverly Wells Author), and using the computer in new ways is so foreign to me. For years, other than being a wife and mother of two boys, I devoted most of my time and energy into my nursing career. Oh, I’ve used the computer at work—doing nursing notes on my homecare patients. I can also email, get on the Internet and find my way through its mazes fairly well. I write my novels on the computer and can now send them to my editor. I’ve done grown up, yes siree. Not really. I lie. I’ve even recently joined facebook at my publisher’s suggestion—but I’m still shuffling along with that one. Blog, twitter, loops and links—YIKES!—well let’s say I’m trying to learn and leave it at that.  I’ve been writing novels for many years and belong to LCRW, my local writing chapter in upstate NY, but up until now hadn’t been published.

Over many long years as a nurse, I’ve had the honor and privilege of caring for hundreds, more like thousands of patients. From working in hospital ICU’s and ER’s to private medical groups, and finally for the NYS Dept. of Health as a Public Health Nurse with my focus on homecare and various clinics. And  I’ve enjoyed every minute.

Though recently retired, I keep my hand  in the medical field by privately contracting with the Dept of Health to do clinics. I also serve on the Medical Reserve Corps as part of Homeland Security. Though the corps continues to train in preparedness, I fervently pray there will never be a reason for them to call us in the future. I hope you feel the same way.

Ever since childhood, I’ve been enamored with the story of Cinderella. What little girl isn’t? But once I grew up, I read only books required in school and in college, and then I had my nose stuck in medical books. I didn’t realize I’d stopped reading for pleasure until a back injury put me flat on back for weeks and bored to death. My friend, Nancy, loaned me a bunch of historical romance novels. WOW!

There were dukes and the feisty heroines who finally became duchesses. There were cowboys of the west with charisma no woman could resist. And of course  pirates, Highlanders…the list went on and on. I loved each and every romance novel I read. I became a maniac and a slave to a good read. Today, I still love the historicals, but also read contemporary, especially the Navy Seals, Delta force, Rangers, FBI, etc., cops, and who done it, as long as they have a romance and make me laugh at the same time. And yes, I do read main stream and enjoy them too.

But I digress here and should go back to when I read Nancy’s borrowed novels. As I read those books, I reverted back to the days of Cinderella. Yet, while reading one that I was truly enjoying, I became stymied at its rushed ending. That’s right. The story, most assuredly, should have gone on for at least 20 pages or more, but the author rushed the ending to a clipped ten pages. I was left disheartened, yearning for just a few more pieces to tie it all together, and FURIOUS.  I felt cheated. That’s when I said I could probably do a better job writing one myself.

Oh Lord, Lord, Lord. Little did I know. I had no background in writing, didn’t know how or where to start. I had a LONG, a very long haul in front of me. I wrote to my favorite two authors at the time and asked how I should begin on my venture. They both said the same thing. Join RWA(Romance Writers of America). I did and my plight began. I also became a charter member of LCRW.

Over the next ten years I wrote what I thought were good reads. Boy, oh boy, how wrong can a person be. I made every mistake in the book—that’s the book on how to write a GOOD BOOK. My first novel ended at page 895. That was only one small error. The second was not knowing what the heck they meant by POV(Point of View) and not understanding what head hoping was. Oh? I had to stay in one characters POV for a duration, then change to another—and do it clearly? Well, let’s just say it has taken me a long, long time as I said before, to get to where I am now. But through determination and perseverance, some setbacks that took me away from writing from time to time,  I’m here on my own web page in hopes that you’ll enjoy tagging along with me through my lengthy journey and that you’ll relish my upcoming books—and hopefully future books as well. It’s been a struggling haul, full of rejections and discouragement, but it’s been one rewarding and exhilarating ride that’s for sure. But I love writing. I need it to breathe.

Between playing in my flower gardens(I just love digging in the earth), cooking for friends, walking my wonderful dog, enjoying the lake(I live in upstate NY on one of the Finger Lakes) and its wildlife, and helping at the local Humane Society, I’m writing to my heart’s content. I continue to hone my writing skills thanks to a multitude of writing friends and authors. I live with my husband Kent, my very own hero, and rescued dog, Jamie, and jump at any chance to see my son, daughter-in-law, and two fantastic and amazing granddaughters as often as I can. And I wonder if there’s anything any better than reading and writing Romance novels.

I’d love to hear from you, so please visit me  beverlywellsauthor@gmail.com or facebook Beverly Wells Author and stay in touch with my web site for the upcoming date of Only When the Loon Sings. Thanks for joining me.

Always,

Bev

March has been Busy!

Here I am again with lots of news.  March 3rd I went to my  hometown(only an hour away) and did a booksigning in the  Crystal City Cafe and Bakery that I’d frequented as a teenager.  Unfortunately, the newspaper article(greatly shortened)  appeared under events on the third section many people didn’t see it. But I did visit with several High school friends and sold a bunch of books.  Since Only When the Loon Sings has a heroine who burns everything she bakes then ends up owning a bakery it was only logical to do the signing at the bakery. The baker made Loon cookies–frosted in white with black lines and red eyes! I gave one out with each book purchased. It was a Hoot!

March 17th marked my next signing at the local bookstore where I now live.  Had a great time there too and more books were sold. This time I gave chocolate truffles with each book. Met a lot of very nice people.

Have another signing lined up in a town about 30 miles from my home at a bookstore.  And in the process of doing another in a bigger city 1 hour away in a Huge popular bakery again. Oh, this so much fun. But it keeps me hopping. Will be going to the local wineries to set up summer signings–I hope–as our season for the big influx of tourists doesn’t start until after June. Gosh, I wish you all could come and join me. We’d have a great time and maybe even sample some wines. Gosh, this sounds better by the minute.

As for writing and promo–oh my, I’m supposed to be doing both, aren’t I? Well I have been trying. Honest. I’m getting ready to submit the synopsis of my next book to the editor–the book is done–and another western Historical.  I’ll save another day to introduce you to Lorelei and Seth.  Oh my stars, I do get goosies just thinking about Dr. Seth Taylor. He is a strong, handsome diligent and skilled doctor. But with a hidden past he can’t forget, he forces himself to avoid any kind of relationship with any woman.  Of course, that’s before he has met the fiesty and determined schoolmarm.

Unfortunately, again I’m laboring over my computer half the time, keeping up with promo and most recently trying to learn Twitter. Yeah God. I’m the one who is not computer savvy–at all.  I’m on Twitter now, have connected with several wonderful, helpful people but still can’t seem to get my photo on my profile page. But I’m determined to get it on Soon! So please bear with me and for heaven’s sake please Wish me luck. I need all I can get.

So enough for now as I must go Twitter. But just want to remind everyone that Only When the Loon Sings is a humorous Historical Romance that I not only wrote to have you enjoy, but to help raise awareness of ALS(Lou Gehrig’s Disease) as well.  I’ll add another yummy recipe next time–Old Fashion Rice Pudding. And believe me when I say your mouth will salvate the minute you take the first bite. It’s sinfully decadent. Yes, with cream galore.

Till next time, have a happy day and keep smiling. LOL

Great News and an Apple Puddin’ recipe

Hi, I said I’d be back after I’d visited the bakery in my hometown. Well, let me tell you, I’m excited.  On March 3rd I’ll be doing a hometown booksigning for Only When the Loon Sings, my Historical Romance through The Wild Rose Press. I frequented the The Crystal City Bakery for years as a young girl and since then, every time I’ve gone back to that city(quite often over the past years), I’ve stopped in for one of their famous eclairs or their cold quarter sheet pizza–it’s to die for.

The manager and owner were very receptive. And the bakers–well they are going to bake Loon-shaped cookies for me to give out with each book sold. How cool is that? I love it! I’m hoping to see many past school friends and more. So again, please wish me well.

Now for the recipe I promised.  Morgan(my heroine) had a special love for ooey-gooey pastries.  And she made it in square tins and sold it as a whole(customers would have to return the pan) or she cut it into pieces and boxed them up. Apple Puddin’ was one of Morgan’s favorites–it’s easier than making a pie and more simple than a cake.

APPLE PUDDIN’

Ingreds. for dough:

1 cup flour    1/2 cup sugar   1/2cup milk   2 tsp. baking powder   pinch of salt   1 cup diced apples(she added a bit more)

Ingreds. for syrup:

1 cup brown sugar   2 cups water    2 Tbl. butter   Boil 5 minutes but do not stir

Mix up batter and pour into pan.   Pour syrup over batter.  Bake for 45minutes @ 350′  It’s simply a delicious gooey pie/puddin’.

Serve with:

Pour cream over; plop a dollop of whipped cream on top, or better yet, top with a scoop of ice cream. OMG is it yummy!  Enjoy.

I hope you enjoy this reciepe, because I have a lot more coming in the future. This reciepe really does date bake to the 1800′s–one of my husband’s great grandma’s.

Oh did I tell you that I have a booksigning in my town on March 17th at the local bookstore. That ought to be a lot of fun too! Plus I’ve had  a lot of positive feedback for my book. Yahoo!

So until next time–I hope in a 2 to 3 weeks, I’ll have another old-fashion recipe that’s quick and simple, yet mouth-watering. Take care till then and happy reading.

What’s new?

Well, it’s been a hectic past two weeks that’s what it has been. For sure. Since my Historical Romance released Jan. 27th by The Wild Rose Press in ebook and print, I’ve had lots of phone calls and facebook comments. But it’s been a blast too. I love it.

I purchased a number of print copies and have been doing small booksignings locally for friends and acquaintances. Got to love it. Even did signings at the fundraiser for the Humane Society’s fundraiser Chicken and Biscuit dinner two weeks ago–well of course I gave the society a percentage of the proceeds. After all, I love those dogs and cats and I am on the Board.

I’ve also been lining up bigger booksignings in the local area bookstores and am really looking forward to them. I’ll have to wait till spring to do some at the wineries–we have a lot of them where I live–as the crowds are much larger in the nicer weather.

In two days, I’m going to my hometown where I hope to schedule another upcoming signing. It will be at the bakery I frequented as a young girl. Bakery? you ask.. That’s right. You see, Morgan, my heroine, burned everything from bread to roasts, then honing her skills with much patience, ends up owning a bakery–a successful bakery, I want you to know. I’m hoping to convince the bakery owner that he’ll pull in a larger crowd with me signing my books. And, hey, some authors give a piece of chocolate or a trinket to each book buyer, so why can’t I give each one a cinnamon roll? Sounds good to me. What do you think? Will the owner agree to let me do this? I’ll have to let you know after I talk to him or her. Wish me luck.

But today I have to connect with the ALS Association. I wrote Only When the Loon Sings not only to write a witty love story, but also to bring awareness to ALS(Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Not sure if they’ll want to be tied in any way, shape or forn to a romance novel, but I thought they outght to know I’m here trying to strengthen their mission.

Enough for now as I also must get to writing–actually revise of my next book All For Love. Oh, how I love that fiesty, outspoken schoolmarm, Lorelei Webster. She’s a spitfire who jostles Seth Taylor’s mind. The good doctor doesn’t know what to make of her–but all that will have to wait till I return to my blog another time. But that’s my day today. Then I’ll walk Jamie(part black lab and my best buddy). I’ll return next week with one of Morgan’s receipes–an apple pudding(more like a gooey apple dumpling cake–but boy oh boy is it good. I’ll also let you know what the bakery owner had to say. So again, please wish me luck.

Wishing you all a great day full of love, happiness and health.

Work in progress

Well, I’m done with my first session of Blogging. I’m not sure I’ll get this all straight after I leave Robbi, but she was a great help. Like I said, I’ll add a recipe or two from Morgan, the heroine in Only When the Loon Sings, and also do a blurb on my upcoming book as I make sure I’m doing this correct.

Check out the excerpt from my book on my author website.
